Understanding SDA: Recap of Our Industry Event with Ability WA
21.03.25
Yesterday, we had the privilege of welcoming some of Perth’s disability sector professionals and advocates to The SDA Landscape event, co-hosted with Ability WA at one of our recently completed Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) properties in Cannington. The morning was filled with meaningful discussions, shared insights, and valuable connections, all aimed at deepening attendee’s understanding of SDA.
The event featured an incredible panel of speakers - Lauren Hart, Brent Woolgar, and Jean Gilbert - each bringing a unique perspective on the SDA journey. And of course, our very own Amanda Gauci.
Lauren Hart, the Founder and Director of Optimal Living Therapy, spoke passionately about the impact of clinical assessments on securing the right housing solutions for people with disabilities. Her insights into the importance of a thorough and well-planned approach highlighted how critical these assessments are in shaping a participant’s experience.
Jean, an Ability WA customer, shared her deeply personal journey of moving into SDA. Hearing her describe how her new home has given her more independence was truly inspiring. “Being in SDA has been really life-changing… it makes me so independent.” Her words resonated throughout the room, reinforcing why we do what we do.
Brent Woolgar, Principal Consultant at DSC, provided both professional expertise and personal experience as a parent of a child navigating their own SDA journey. His knowledge of SDA design, coupled with his lived experience, offered a comprehensive look at the challenges and opportunities within the sector. It was eye-opening to hear about the ongoing improvements being made to ensure SDA homes truly meet the needs of their residents.
Beyond the panel discussions, the event fostered valuable conversations and networking opportunities for attendees. The newly built home was filled with support coordinators, allied health professionals, and housing providers, all committed to improving SDA outcomes for NDIS participants. It was an inspiring morning filled with practical takeaways, heartfelt stories, and a shared commitment to making a difference.
We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our panellists, Lauren, Brent, and Jean, for sharing their knowledge, experiences, and insights. Their contributions made this event truly impactful, and we appreciate them sharing their time with us.
