Living Independently: Keith’s Journey to His New SDA Villa

13.01.25

Recently, Sue visited Keith, one of our newest tenants, at his beautiful new home in Cannington. Over a cuppa and a chat, Sue checked in to see how Keith was settling into the modern villa he now calls home. Having moved in mid-2024, Keith is already enjoying the independence and comfort his new Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) home offers.

Keith’s villa is part of our recently completed three-unit development in Cannington. The development includes his single-resident home, a three-person share home, and a two-person share home. While Keith has the luxury of an entire home to himself, there’s still availability in the two-person share villa for those seeking a blend of privacy and community living. If you’re interested, contact us for more information!

Nestled on a serene, tree-lined street with no-through access, this development is a peaceful retreat while being well-connected. Enjoy proximity to Westfield Carousel shopping centre, offering effortless access to retail outlets, dining options, entertainment facilities, and essential services. Keith’s home is designed with independence in mind. The villa boasts a spacious bedroom with private a ensuite, high ceilings, and a modern but calming colour palette. Features like auto-entry doors, automated blinds, intercom systems, tablet-controlled lighting, and air conditioning provide convenience and ease. The kitchen is not only stylish but also inclusive, with adjustable-height benches and its wide open plan makes navigating in a wheelchair a breeze, ensuring residents can enjoy meal preparation with ease.

Sue asked how living in an SDA home designed for independence changed Keith’s daily life or routine. Keith responded that it had greatly changed his daily life. He explained, "I can go out whenever I want. I can go to the shops because they're just down the road. I go to my doctor because he's just down the road. It’s changed heaps". Sue asked Keith about his experience moving into the villa and how it compares to his previous living arrangements. Keith shared that he had lived in a transitional house with several other people before. “I was in a transitional house before, and it had several people in it,” he said. He went on to say, “It’s great living on my own here. It’s much better.”

During their conversation, Sue also asked Keith what makes his new home feel welcoming and homely. He smiled and said, “I can put all my photos up. It’s just great.” He also highlighted how the support staff, who are available when needed, enhance his independence. Keith explained, “I get the staff for three hours in the morning and three hours at night, but I don’t really need to call them because I’m very independent.”

Later, Sue inquired what Keith would say to someone considering a move to an SDA home but feeling unsure. Without hesitation, Keith said, “I’d laugh at them and tell them to move straight away. It’s made a great difference to me and my independence.”

If you or someone you know is considering SDA living, our two-person share house still has availability. Don’t miss the chance to join this vibrant community and experience the perfect balance of privacy, convenience, and connected living.
