Higher Density living has big advantages
Did you know that there are two government policies that promote the development of higher density living in our communities? Directions 2031 and Liveable Neighbourhoods aim to achieve compact, well-defined and more sustainable urban communities that encourage innovation and meet the needs of our population. These are important and exciting directions for inner city communities, particularly as they support developers like us to help shape our city.
This is great but “so what?” you might think. Well, like all developers, we have faced a number of obstacles in getting various approvals through councils. Disgruntled neighbours have such a big voice in the process and rarely do we get to hear an opposing view. So we’ve been proactive and taken a closer look at the positive side; the reasons why urban infill development is so important to our communities.
Ideally it would be great if we could help raise awareness about the long term planning advantages of building integrated and sustainable communities. We are sure that the public would be more accepting of these developments if they knew about the directions for our great city Perth. So for those of you who have an interest in this topic, here’s a short and sweet snapshot of what we found:
• Affordability – more housing options for young people wanting to live in communities they grew up in.
• Choice – more options for older people downsizing and wanting to stay in the area.
• Access to the city – who doesn’t love being close to everything our city and inner suburbs have to offer?!
• Visual interest – opportunities to compliment our contemporary lifestyles.
• Represents the interests of the future.
• Strengthens communities – better access to services, walkability and connectivity. All providing a better sense of place.
• Economical and environmental savings -reduced car dependency, better use of transport, resulting in less carbon emissions.
• Lessens urban sprawl where communities have less infrastructure and connectivity and are car dependent.
